The Friends of Tenerife was founded and registered in 1993 by Maria Worwood (who's idea it was) & her husband Keith, Roy & Chris Longden, Roger & Gina Strange, William & Dawn Rutherford and Betty Cope. It was formed with the aim of raising money for local charities. See more
Roy Longden was elected the first President, and money was raised by social gatherings, attended initially by just a couple of dozen Members. Since then Membership of the Friends of Tenerife has grown substantially, and money is raised for a wide range of charities that help people in need, especially children, in Tenerife.
Ann Goulden took over from Roy Longden as President in 2000, and remained until 2007, when she decided it was time to step down after many years of hard but rewarding work. However she is still involved with the Asociación San Lázaro – Proyecto Martha II home for children with cerebral palsy.
Helen Jamieson, our current President, was born in Glasgow and at the age of four moved to the picturesque village of Carmunnock in the beautiful Scottish countryside. She sang in the local church choir which gave Helen her love of singing. At the age of 28 Helen became a professional entertainer and spent the next 20 years doing the work she loved. Helen is well travelled and spent many years in the Middle East. She and husband Tom retired to Tenerife in 1988 and have loved every minute spent here. Helen's role as President is positive and confident, and her aim is to raise as much money as possible for those less fortunate than herself.
